Mission Statement

Bay Area Legal Aid (BayLegal) is committed to protecting the legal rights of the Bay Area's low-income communities. To accomplish this goal, we provide free civil legal services to low-income clients in the counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara. Our vision is to provide equal access to our services and high quality legal assistance throughout the Bay Area regardless of a client's location, language, or disability.

Description

Bay Area Legal Aid (BayLegal) is the largest provider of free civil legal services throughout the Bay Area. BayLegal serves low-income individuals and families in 7 Bay Area Counties: Contra Costa; Alameda; Santa Clara; San Mateo; Marin; Napa; and San Francisco counties.

BayLegal’s services include: advice; referrals; limited scope assistance; extended representation; public policy and impact advocacy; trainings; outreach; and community education.

BayLegal focuses on the four priority areas identified by clients and the community as the most pressing:

  • Domestic Violence Prevention: Assisting domestic violence survivors escape the violence and create a safe and stable environment for themselves and their families through Family Law, Restraining Order, and Immigration assistance.
  • Housing Preservation: Assist clients to access and preserve safe affordable housing free of discrimination, with specific focus on Eviction defense and Fair Housing.
  • Access to Health Care: Assist clients to obtain healthcare services from county and state programs
  • Economic Security: Assisting clients secure public benefits and eliminate the barriers to employment and self-sufficiency.
