Mission Statement

Pathways to Spirit is a nonprofit, all volunteer organization dedicated to the provision of material assistance to and cultural preservation of Native Americans on the reservations of South Dakota and along the Front Range of Colorado from Denver to Wyoming. Pathways seeks the easing of the effects of poverty, the reduction of discrimination, and the transmission of Native American languages and way of life across generations. The organization pursues this mission through direct provision of goods and services, education and training, and evolving partnerships with other organizations.

Description

Pathways to Spirit was founded in 1996 in response to the deplorable conditions on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Indian Reservations in South Dakota and along the front Range of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado and Wyoming. Several projects are addressing the immediate needs of individuals living on the reservations. Pathways provides emergency housing, through the New Beginnings Mobile Home Project; The Thunder Child Emergence Project provides experiential learning opportunities to establish resiliancy and provide leadership development training. The Children's Library Project is designed to provide a safe family reading room and a physical building to house the more than 10,000 donated books currently in storage. The fourth direct area of support is the Native American Sewing Project, this program provides sewing machines, tools and materials to allow grandmothers, mothers and young girls to gather in a safe and engaging social setting. Together they learn and preserve traditional and modern sewing arts.
