Mission Statement

We seek both to serve Bronx residents with matters before the civil, criminal and family court system by addressing the root causes and consequences of their involvement in the justice system through the practice of Holistic Defense and to promote the theory and methods of Holistic Defense by offering technical assistance and instruction to legal service providers nation-wide.

Description

The Bronx Defenders is a community-based, multi-service organization dedicated to addressing the underlying problems of poverty in the Bronx.

In September 1997, eight people met in front of a storefront in the South Bronx to change the way indigent clients were represented. Years later, our staff of more than 140 meets clients walking through our doors: lawyers, social workers, investigators, community organizers, and parent advocates.

Mindful that we could be perceived by our clients as yet another bureaucracy if we only focused on solving their legal issues, The Bronx Defenders has designed every element of its practice to reflect our holistic approach. Consider our office, an open space, where offices are encased in glass, not concrete. This intentional design breaks down the distrust our clients feel when entering our office for the first time; nothing is hidden. In this setting, they then meet the team assigned to their case, not only an attorney, but an array of professionals, working for them.

Our unique and innovative Holistic Defense model consistently achieves success for our clients by helping to address the underlying causes that brought them into the justice system and through our smart and vigorous advocacy.
