Mission Statement

Volunteers Needed! Volunteer Description for "Accessible Theater Arts" City College of San Francisco Dept. of Disabled Students Accessible Theater Arts are inclusive theater classes adaptive for people with and without disabilities. Our free, non-credit classes aim to provide a safe, nurturing and fun class for students to explore their imagination, develop acting skills, and build community. Volunteers are essential for students to develop independence and confidence while improvising, dancing and performing scenes and at times learning lines from scripts.

Description

Volunteer Description

Volunteers need not be actors or have experience acting, just a desire to participate and have fun. At the end of the semester there will be an informal presentation for family and friends.

Volunteer duties could include: participating in warm ups and modeling, pairing up with students and assisting in small movement or acting scenes, setting up AV equipment, and modeling scenes with the instructor (depending on the level of comfort and experience of the volunteer).

Classes are approximately 2 hours long (9:30-11:45 and 12-2pm and the semester usually culminates in a final performance for friends and family.

Volunteers are welcome to assist with one or both classes and are welcome to visit initially to see if it's a good match. Feel free to contact the instructor with questions. This is a fun, participatory and potentially life changing experience for both the volunteers and the participants in the class.

These classes are free to the public and non-credit and open to anyone, with or without disabilities.

I realy enjoyed my time volunteering with Judy and the rest of the team. The environment is welcoming and relaxed for students and volunteers alike. The curriculum was engaging, the other volunteers and the students were creative and fun, and I really enjoyed seeing the students express themselves. Additionally, the curriculum builds on itself to an end goal/product, which is quite satisfying for all who participate in it. Judy is a great leader who is fun, professional, and talented. And if you have some serious sign language or theater skills, you will be of even more use. This is a great way to spend your time.
