Mission Statement

To promote sustainable community development in rural Peru through empowerment and education.

Description

Awamaki operates in the town of Ollantaytambo, Cusco, Peru, and in surrounding rural communities. Awamaki runs programs in health and education; we work to preserve and foster Quechua culture; we create economic opportunities for women; and we promote a more sustainable tourism that benefits local families. We like to incorporate social enterprise strategies into the operations of our programs.

Awamaki currently runs a fair trade weaving project with indigenous Quechua women and a knitting project with disadvantaged rural women. Awamaki also offers English and computer classes and works to promote health education and improved clinical care. Awamaki's sustainable tourism initiative includes publications on the area to imrpove tourist information, and creating economic opportunities for local families. Our international volunteer program helps us run many of these programs.

We also rely on volunteers in Seattle, where the organization is based, and on volunteers working remotely from all over the United States and the world.
