JazzPhil-USA’s mission is to foster growth and advancement within the Filipino culture and jazz community through music, scholarship, education, and advocacy. JazzPhil-USA presents talented jazz artists of Filipino descent - not only to the many Filipino-American communities throughout the United States but also to mainstream American jazz audiences. JazzPhil-USA supports the academic and professional development of Filipino-American jazz artists, and fosters camaraderie among musicians and fans of every persuasion, bound in a common appreciation of jazz. The organization pursues the establishment of local chapters in cities and states where there is a significant Filipino-American population.
Filipino American Jazz Festival
The Festival lasts three days and it fulfills our organization mission to uplift talented jazz artists of Filipino descent by showcasing them to Filipino-American and mainstream communities. We foster camaraderie among musicians and fans of every persuasion, from increasingly diverse communities bound in a common appreciation of jazz. We also build the interest of jazz among the Filipino-Americans, while presenting to the mainstream community the influences of the Filipino culture on jazz and hence lead a musical conversation.
JazzPhil-USA hosts a talent search in Los Angeles, which takes place at the Historic Filipinotown Festival in August of each year. The winner earns a spot at our annual Filipino American Jazz Festival in Los Angeles. Overall our talent search serves to nurture and support young and upcoming jazz artists of Filipino descent.
Lifetime Achievement Award
Every year at our annual jazz festival in Los Angeles we honor an artist with this award for their artistic track record and talent.
Emil Mijares Scholarship
Established in 2007, this scholarship named after the late and great Filipino pianist Emil Mijares (1935-2007), whose love for jazz and true spirit resonates within the mission of the organization. Each year we grant a $1,000 scholarship to a student of Filipino descent in Southern California who is enrolled in higher education of jazz or music studies.
Clinics & Workshops
Every year at the Los Angeles Filipino American Jazz Festival we host one clinic and/or workshops per day during the duration of the Festival. In a teaching environment, we further educate participants about jazz and its history in the Philippines and the contributions of the Filipino culture on jazz. This program allows us to reach out to different populations of varying ages from elementary schoolchildren to adults, from jazz aficionados to professional musicians.
