Mission Statement

The Food Bank was founded in 1982 out of a need to centralize food procurement and distribution for individuals in need. Thirty three years later, the Food Bank serves a 12 county area, slightly larger than the state of Massachusetts, which covers 10,555 square miles! Over the 2015 fiscal year, we distributed 3.7 million pounds of food (equating to 3.1 million meals) and currently serve over 74,000 individuals annually. The Food Bank runs with over 100 years of combined tenure from 21 employees, of which 9 are funded by grants.

Partner agencies include emergency pantries, senior centers, youth centers, group homes, rehabilitation centers and qualifying charities serving congregate meals and snacks. Food is acquired through five programs/streams: food drives; USDA commodities; retail donations (daily pickups at area stores); reclaim (truckloads of salvageable food); and Good-Buy Hunger Food Purchasing Program. Three successful programs that have been established to address child hunger at the Food Bank: Kids Cafe (providing after school meals); PowerPak 4 Kids BackPack Program (providing food for the weekend); and the School Pantry at WFISD; and for people age 60+ we offer Senior Brown Bag, offering supplemental groceries, and Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program.
