Description
Community Homeworks is a 501(c)(3) Non Profit organization with a focus area of Kalamazoo County, Michigan. It works to equip low and very low income home owners with skills, resources, and financial assistance to empower them to maintain their property, build equity and engage with their communities through mentorships and collaborations to build healthy neighborhoods.
The largest program at Community Homeworks is providing emergency repairs to individuals covering health and safety risks, removal of blight and prevention of property deterioration. This is done with an internal team of paid and volunteer professionals experienced in the four main construction trades; plumbing, electrical, mechanical and building construction.
Community Homeworks has also partnered with Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity and Kalamazoo Neighborhood Housing Services to make workshops and classes in home repair and maintenance available to all low income homeowners in Kalamazoo. As the central location, Community Homeworks administers several three hour workshops, ranging from basic maintenance and lawn care to plumbing and electrical repairs. These skills, combined with a future tool lending library and a low-cost building materials store will give low income homeowners all three resources needed to become self sufficient and able to maintain their own homes.
