Mission Statement

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.

Description

Relay For Life is the signature event of the American Cancer Society, which brings people together to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and empower individuals and communities to fight back against a disease that takes too much. Teams of 8-15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags to camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events, and each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times.

For nearly 100 years, the American Cancer Society has been working to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. The movement for more birthdays is about everyday people coming together to make a difference. This year more than 11 million cancer survivors will celebrate another birthday, thanks in part to the progress we've already made. But we can't stop there. With every person who joins the movement, we can get closer to the day when cancer never steals another year from someone's life. It all starts by helping people stay well and get well, and by finding cures and fighting back.
