Description

Five years ago, Shawn B. Young, founder and Executive Director of Frontier Asset Building began developing and teaching educational content aimed at helping to better prepare young adults for independence and self-sufficiency. In 2007, the organization received its 501c3 status under the name Advocates for Young Adults, with the original mission of improving personal and professional lives through financial and civic education.

I n response to its newly developing programs, expanded service demographic, and evolving niche in the community,Advocates for Young Adults changed its name to Frontier Asset Building and its mission to promoting self reliance through asset building. Since its inception in 2007, the organization has evolved into the largest and most prolific asset building education and service provider in Colorado, helping over 11,000 underserved and low income families and individuals of all ages break out of the cycle of poverty and achieve economic self sufficiency annually.

Early in its work in the field, Advocates for Young Adults experienced success and gained recognition as a financial education provider for Colorado organizations offering asset building services, including microenterprise, matched savings account, and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs, to underserved and low income individuals. Through its exposure to these organizations, Advocates for Young Adults became well versed in and passionate about the numerous benefits associated with asset accumulation for individuals left out of the economic mainstream, and the various asset building tools and opportunities available for low income Coloradoans. The organization was particularly inspired by the significant impact on poverty reduction that Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs consistently demonstrated. This prompted Advocates for Young Adults to explore the benefits of developing a coalition to support, provide resources for, and encourage collaboration among Colorado organizations offering VITA programs and initiated the development of its Colorado Asset Building Coalition program.
