Mission Statement
As a unit of the National Park System we are entrusted to preserve and protect our national natural and cultural treasures for present and future generations.
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore was established by Congress in 1966 to preserve the multiple habitats, cultural resources and recreational opportunities along the southern shore of Lake Michigan.
Description
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is over 15,000 acres along the southern shore of Lake Michigan. Henry Cowles, the father of modern ecology, took the south shore train out to the dunes in the early part of the 20th Century from his classroom at the University of Chicago to study the unparallel diversity in this comparatively tiny space. Here you can find arctic plants along side high desert plants, over 300 species of birds, and seven species of wild orchid.
