Mission Statement

Building Better Communities is designed to build community and civic responsibility in youth and adults in Ohio's low- to moderate-income communities. Volunteers will help AmeriCorps members build civic engagement, environmental understanding and responsibility.

Building Better Communities runs three specific programs; After-School and Summer Youth Programs; Adult Education Program; and a Community Service Program.

  • After-School and Summer Program: Youth in grades one through six participate in an after-school program at NCR's properties four days a week where they will recieve assistance with homework, a healthy meal, and take part in Building Better Communities comprehensive educational curriculum that focuses on the environment, energy conservation, and civic responsibility. This program is designed to not only provide youth with knowledge, but also to empower then to educate others and to make a difference in their own community.
  • Adult Education Program: Adult Residents of NCR properties have the opportunity to participate in educational workshops that complement the after school program. The Programming includes resume building and computer skills training.
  • Community Service Program: Part of being civically invested in your community is giving back through service. Building Better Communities work with partnering organizations to plan and implement community service projects. Some projects will take place on national days of service such as MLK Day and Make a Difference Day and will include activities like painting, landscaping, crafts and general neighborhood beautification.
