Mission Statement

Science Discovery's mission is to stimulate scientific interest, understanding and literacy among Colorado's youth, teachers and families by interfacing with University resources and academic expertise. Science Discovery is dedicated to engaging the whole person in the journey of learning, thereby strengthening individual capacities to participate actively in local and world communities.

Description

Science Discovery conducts after school and summer classes for local students and partners with the local school districts to offer some of these opportunities free to disadvantaged youth. Science Explorers, another Science Discovery program, provides professional development for over 500 teachers in hands-on science methods, scientific content and provides kits of materials for teachers to implement the curriculum in their classrooms. Science Discovery also offers K-12 classroom presentations highlighting current faculty research and science content that supports the Colorado State Content standards (Science From CU). Presenters for Science From CU work closely with the school districts and travel throughout the state to deliver these programs. Science Discovery runs 12 wilderness camps during the summer for students from 4th through 12th grade, emphasizing the study of ecology, biology and biodiversity. During the school year we work with inner city schools in the Denver Public Schools through the Urban Environmental Education Program.
