Mission Statement

Expressed in its still-relevant motto "Urbi et Orbi," the mission of Long Island University since 1926 has been to open the doors of the city and the world to men and women of all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, who wish to achieve the satisfaction of the educated life and to serve the public good. The institution's mission is to awaken, enlighten and expand the minds of its students.

Description

Together with the Prospect Lefferts Gardens Neighborhood Association, LIU-Brooklyn is organizing a day of service on Martin Luther King's birthday with the support of a 2011 MLK Challenge Grant. We will be holding reading and storytelling about the civil rights movement for children in the lobbies of several apartment buildings in the neighborhood. Our goal is to recruit 50 volunteers to consist of LIU students, Medgar Evers College students, and area residents to reclaim the space from those who disrespect it (e.g., drug dealers), to foster literacy among youth, and to educate children and one another about the achievements of the civil rights movement as well as the work that remains to be done.
