Mission Statement

Mi Casa's mission is to provide affordable housing opportunities for low-and moderate-income households in Washington DC in order to foster healthy and thriving communities.

Description

Mi Casa creates affordable housing in DC by renovating deteriorating properties and building new homes throughout the city, and then selling them at prices affordable to low and moderate income individuals and families. Mi Casa also helps convert rental multi-family buildings into owned limited equity cooperatives and affordable condominiums. Mi Casa helps tenants organize to purchase buildings that landlords wish to sell, and then helps the new tenant/owners navigate the purchase and post-purchase processes by providing education on housing development and cooperative homeownership issues along with training in finances, management and leadership. All Mi Casa clients are economically disadvantaged, earning less than 80 percent of the Area Median Income (many earn less than 50 or 30 percent AMI); 95 percent are African American, Latino and recent immigrants from Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America; Mi Casa is the only nonprofit housing developer in Washington DC to focus on the housing needs of the low-income Latino community.
