Mission Statement

afghans for Afghans is a humanitarian and educational people-to-people project that is sending hand-knit and crocheted blankets to the beleaguered people of Afghanistan.

Description

Americans are making ... afghans for Afghans! Please join us. Knit or crochet a handmade blanket for an Afghan refugee. This grassroots effort is inspired by those Red Cross volunteers who made afghans, socks, slippers, and other garments for soldiers and refugees during World Wars I and II and at other times of crisis and need. Your gift of a handmade blanket will bring comfort and warmth to Afghan women, men, and children who continue to suffer from oppression, war, hunger, poverty, and sickness. Your lovingly made afghan will send a message of concern and hope to our fellow humans on the other side of the globe. This project is an excellent activity for community and youth groups, too. Each individual makes a square, then sew the squares into one blanket. Visit http://www.afghansforAfghans.org/blanket.html for details on getting started, plus free patterns and shipping address. The Agape Foundation is our fiscal sponsor.

Back in the Fall of 2001, the people that ended up founding Afghans for Afghans were online volunteers I recruited for a project I worked on at UN Volunteers headquarters. Their spirit and passion couldn't be contained on just that one project, and they went on to found Afghans for Afghans. That their organization has grown from just an idea of a few online volunteers to an international network of contributors, and that it's still going strong, speaks volumes about the credibility and success of this ongoing effort. I recommend the group frequently to others, and I'm happy to be able to endorse it in such a public way online.
