The Senior Peer Counseling Program is committed to improving the mental health of seniors and their caregives by providing quailty peer counseling support to those experiencing life transitions.

Description

Senior Peer Counselors complete a 45-hour training course on how to become a peer counselor. Training teaches counselors listening skills, counseling skills and specialized topics such as depression, dementia, anxiety, caregiving, etc. Upon completion of the training, peer counselors are assigned to clients in the community. Weekly consultation groups and monthly training groups are offered as support for peer counselors. Counselors will meet with their clients for at least one hour per week and maintain brief case notes on their clients. There are no educational requirements; life experience suffices. Senior Peer Counselors will counsel older adults (55 years and older) and caregivers of any age. Clients live in the towns of Newark, Fremont, Union City, and Hayward.
