Mission Statement

We care for people with life limiting illness, provide support and solace to the grieving, and educate the community.

Description

We are . . . about living, about giving people access to what they need so they will have the best possible care during a difficult time. Patients who choose hospice have made a decision--along with their doctor to change cure goals to comfort goals.

We provide free services to any family in Somerset County dealing with life limiting illness and/or bereavement and loss issues. Our county, located in Central Maine is a vast area that encompasses almost 4000 square miles; HVSC’s program office is located in Skowhegan, almost 100 miles from the most northern point. Our trained volunteers provide compassionate, one-on-one, non-medical support to families who are dealing with a loved one’s terminal condition and approaching end of life. These services continue throughout the illness and extend for a minimum period of thirteen months after the death has occurred. Hospice Volunteer services are provided wherever the client resides (at their home, a nursing facility, a hospital, or a boarding home). Bereavement services are provided at a location most convenient for the family such as their home, our program offices, a school, church, library, or hospital.
