Position Description: The Refugee Employment Services Intern will be working with employment programs within the Refugee Services Department to provide clients the support and preparation needed to achieve self-sufficiency. Clients will typically be New Americans seeking their first job in the United States. Candidate Profile: High school graduate, or enrolled in a post-secondary institution At least two years of paid work experience Strong written and verbal communication and proficient in Microsoft Office and internet use Highly organized and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously Experience interacting with English Language Learners Real interest in refugee and immigrant issues Preferred: Ability to communicate in one or more of the following languages: Arabic, Somali, Kiswahili, or Oromo. The Nurse/NCLEX Tutor will be with immigrant nursing school graduates who are preparing to take the nurse license exams (NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-LPN) to provide clients the support and preparation needed to be successful in their health care careers. Position available: Classroom Assistant for Hospitality Program, unpaid Type: Part-time 10-12 hours/week, 3 days a week, days and times negotiable. Supervised by: Lynn Thompson, Program Manager and Instructor Number of Positions Open: 1 Description: The Hospitality Intern will assist students in IIMN’s Hospitality Program in the classroom. The Hospitality Intern will work directly with students in the Hospitality classes as they learn industry specific English, job skills, practice for job interviews and prepare for the American workplace environment. Students in the Cashier, Housekeeping and Dietary Aide class are often new to the US, have never worked before in the US or are looking to find entry level positions in the healthcare or hospitality industry. Students often face barriers to employment such as, low English ability, transportation, lack of childcare and unstable housing. The Hospitality Intern will also have the opportunity to assist with the Professional Leadership Training class. The students in this class are advanced English Language Learners who are often looking for advancement in their careers or switching careers. Interns who have enjoyed this internship in the past have been patient, energetic, comfortable with independent problem-solving, and interested in tutoring. Position Description: The Immigration service program involves working directly with clients to help them complete immigration forms for benefits such as permanent residency and U.S. citizenship. You meet with clients one to one by appointment. It is a great opportunity to learn about how immigration works as well as the steps clients for through to obtain the benefits. Time in the program is generally pretty structured. The majority of our clients in both programs are mainly refugees or former refugees. That means the countries they represent are mainly: Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Bhutan, Burma, some Iraq and misc. others. If you are looking to work with a Spanish speaking population we would be a good fit for you. Also if you are thinking of a project related to immigrants and their situation this would not be the best fit. Our agency mainly works with refugees, who had no choice but to flee their homeland, due to war or persecution issues. This is very different than people who choose to come to the U.S. or flee their country due to economic reasons. Training is provided and you will be supervised by IIMN program staff throughout your internship. Primary Duties Include: Assist refugee and asylee clients with various immigration applications including permanent residency (Green Card) and citizenship. Maintain contact with clients via telephone or in writing to support them during their immigration process. Complete case notes, update databases and complete immigration-related research. Respond to clients’ questions on various immigration procedures. Update curriculum for citizenship classes and complete small projects for other agency programs as needed. Take passport and immigration photos. Assist with small projects for other Institute programs Candidate Profile: Candidate should have a strong interest in learning about immigrant and refugee communities Candidate must have good written English Candidate should have experience working in a cross-cultural environment Candidate should be familiar with computers and the Internet Candidate should be able to work independently and as part of a team Time Commitment: Minimum of 12 hours/week for 4 months. Willing to consider less weekly hours if commitment can be made for more than 4 months.
