Mission Statement

The Alt Theatre which houses the NEW ALT PERFORMANCE GROUP, (NAPG) is an intimately comfortable haven where one can witness courageous and honest creation in theatre, dance, music, poetry, media and film. In a setting like The Alt, the audience becomes deeply empathetic witnesses aware, at least on a subconscious level, of receiving the rare gift of an intimate performance. This response is fueled by an intense fusion performer to audience, human to human, making profound links via empathy and universal sensitivity. These timeless wonders of theatre are sometimes missing in today’s world of virtual relationships and entertainment. The Alt honors our contemporary culture which offers amazing technology and the experimental fast track. It also recognizes its most important mission to advocate human contact within theatre. This is the gathering of people and the resultant community within the theatre’s "real space." The NAPG formed in the summer of 2008, is a vehicle for articulating and extending the performing arts. The GROUP exists to provide the space, theatrical resources and artistic guidance for 21st century artists to excel in producing universally appealing art with an intrinsic value to our city, nation and world. The NAPG will curate recipients for the NEW ALT PERFORMANCE GROUP Center for Creativity awards to both individuals and non-profit companies, thus ensuring collaborative artistic creation, the influx of national and international caliber artists to Buffalo and the eventuating public showings of these works.
The NAPG functions to enlighten participants and our community through its support of collaboration and innovation among multi-disciplinary artists of varied backgrounds. The mission of such work is to unite audiences, foster community dialogue and help to eliminate prejudice and discrimination. The NAPG believes the artist must be permitted complete freedom to create, refine and discover his/her true voice without the distraction of outside commercial standards or mainstream aesthetic ideals. Art made through a pioneering journey like this will enrich society, achieve excellence and transcend the mundane. The NAPG members perform within the Alt Theatre and through various outreach functions at affordable rates throughout the region bringing contemporary art to people of all backgrounds and ages. The NAPG fosters cross-cultural exchange, integration and superior art making in Buffalo forBuffalo and the nation at large.
