Mission Statement

The preservation, development and administration of the Old Exchange Building, a public building built in 1768-1771 possessing historical and architectural significance; and, hold open to the general public as a museum to interpret our historic heritage advancing the education to South Carolinians and others relative to the State's role in obtaining our Nation's independence, and serve as a reminder of the sacrifice of those who helped build our Nation.

Description

Considered to be one of the three most historically significant Colonial buildings in the United States, the Old Exhange Building is a "must see" when visiting Charleston.

The Old Exchange Building is an historic site/ attraction of the colonial era, owned by the South Carolina State Society of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution with the Rebecca Motte Chapter being the steward chapter since 1913. It is operated by the Old Exchange Building Commission since 1981. In 1989the Commission entered into an Agreement of Management with the City of Charleston for the management of daily operations, which includes, but not limited to, the following: Staffing of personnel to accomplish the generation of revenues sufficient to fund daily operations from Admission sales, Gift Shop Sales, Building Rental, Education Programs, and the staffing of personnel for Building Care/Maintenance, Record keeping and the Monthly/Quarterly Reporting of activities.
