Mission Statement
Since the publication of the first issue of Spare Change News in 1992,we have pursued a three-fold mission for addressing homelessness:
- Produce a product, the Spare Change News street paper, that homeless and low-income people can sell with dignity;
- Provide a way for low-income and homeless people to showcase their talents and tell their stories by publishing their work and paying them for their contributions; and
- Educate the general public about the issues and realities faced by people living in poverty.
Description
Spare Change News vendors --our salespeople-- buy the paper for $0.25 per copy and sell it for $1.00, earning the balance for themselves; they also often receive tips, so the work can provide a good supplemental income. More important, the job offers good preparation and practice for other work, with a bonus boost to self-esteem.
Writing and producing the paper requires the effort of many volunteers: writers, editors, designers, photographers, and distribution and office staff. all supported by charitable grants and individual donations. We receive no government assistance.
We welcome college students, community members, and our readers as volunteers.
