Mission Statement

To transform a bleak asphalt public schoolyard into an exciting and challenging Outdoor Learning Environment, with varied features, including gardens, orchard, outdoor classrooms and amphitheater, murals, and safe and innovative play structures, all of which will enhance student learning as well as provide opportunities to strengthen inter-generational and cross-cultural community relationships through program development.

Description

Project OLE (Outdoor Learning Environment) was organized by a group of parents, staff, students and community members of public K-8 San Francisco Community School. Over the past two years, we have worked together to design a Master Plan for the creation of a garden and park to replace the asphalt schoolyard, and have built the first two features of our Environment (including gardens, sand/water play area). We hope to complete building the remaining two-thirds of our Environment (which will include climbing opportunities, additional gardens, orchard, outdoor meeting areas, amphitheater) over the next two years. School curriculum is being integrated into the Environment through art projects, gardening projects, and science projects. After-school and summer programs are also envisioned to expand use of this Environment, through collaboration with the SF Boys and Girls Club (Excelsior Youth Center) and SF Rec and Parks Dept.
