The Komen Race for the Cure Series is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world. Since its origination in Dallas in 1983, it has grown from one local race with 800 participants to an international series of 116 races. Up to seventy-five percent of the net funds raised from this Race will remain in Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays Travis and Williamson counties to fund local breast cancer projects. The remaining twenty-five percent will go to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Award and Research Grant Program. In 2003, more than 15,000 Austin participants and local businesses helped raise over $500,000 for the fight against breast cancer.
