The Homeless Garden Project provides job training, transitional employment, and support services to people who are experiencing homelessness. HGP's vibrant education and volunteer program for the broad community blends formal, experiential, and service learning. The programs take place in our 3-acre organic farm and related enterprises. On the farm, you will meet the crew, learn more about the farm, and join that day's activities which may include: weeding, harvesting, planting, building compost, and more. Projects are weather dependent and defined by the day's priorities. We often can't tell you exactly what project you'll be working on in advance. Tuesday - Fridays: Arrive at 10 am, and join our crew for the morning stretch and delegation of tasks for the day. Stay until 2 pm or leave anytime in between. Lunch is included and served at noon. Saturdays & Sundays: Arrive any time from 10 am - 4 pm, and join our weekend farm staff and volunteers in various farm tasks. Stay until 4 pm or leave anytime in between. *Everyone must come with closed-toe shoes, and we recommend that everyone also wear sunscreen, a hat, layers and bring a water bottle. The farm is located on Shaffer Road at Delaware Ave. on the west side of Santa Cruz near Natural Bridges State Park and the Long Marine Lab. The 3 and 20 bus lines stop nearby. When you arrive, complete a waiver and sign in at the red farmstand. After that, a staff member will get you started on that day's projects.

The Customer Service Volunteer welcomes customers, offers to answer questions, assists at the register, restocks merchandise, supports Shift Manager as needed, and educates customers in the store about HGP, upcoming events, and how they can support and get involved. Customer Service shifts are 7 days/week: 12pm - 2pm, 2pm-4pm & 4pm-6pm. All volunteers must attend one orientation training before their first volunteer shift. Once you attend an orientation, I will add you to our online work scheduler, so you can select the shifts you'd like to work. Orientations are hosted at the store location, 1338 Pacific Avenue. I will send you an email to sign up. You only need to attend one orientation. About our Store: Our Store is where we make a significant amount of our yearly income to support our transitional employment and job training program for folks experiencing homelessness or housing instability. Those who are in the training program make over 40 types of products using materials we grow on the farm, including food products, bath and body products, and dried-flower wreaths. Each year we have a network of over 100 volunteers who support the store. The store is, in part, volunteer run, meaning that the profit we make goes directly toward supporting our programs and folks transitioning out of homelessness. **This is a Referral Opportunity, which means it is run directly by one of our nonprofit partners. Once you express interest, someone from the partner organization should follow up with you shortly to discuss confirming you as a volunteer for this opportunity.
