Mission Statement
Our mission is to teach tennis and character qualities; promote reading and nutrition to underserved urban youth. Help them learn a healthy life-long sport, and have opportunities to participate in team competition. We use tennis as a means, through caring volunteers and professional programs, to provide character-building guidance, with love and encouragement for a brighter future..
Description
UYTF operates all-volunteer, year-round programming in varying gym locations using tennis as a tool to reach, teach and mentor inner-city children, ages six to thirteen. Children are taught tennis with modern QuickStart Tennis techniques and introduced to fun-filled team competition. With love and encouragement, the children learn self-confidence, teamwork, and discipline. Each session also includes a "chalk-talk" lesson in a character principle or nutrition advice, and a book reading assignment; as well as a nutritional post-session snack. During this summer, a tennis camp (14th annual) will be held at the only municipal courts in the city of Saginaw. Led by a USPTA certified instructors, volunteer instructors touch the lives of approximately 100 kids a year. We also lease for $1/yr and maintain cities tennis facility, Garber Tennis Courts.
