Breaking the Cycle of Poverty
Young people can overcome poverty when they gain an education, financial responsibility, and self-confidence. Yet when they don't achieve those goals, the vicious cycle of high-school dropouts, socio-economic disadvantage, and poverty continues.
This is the premise that drives our mission: to provide underserved students with educational and entrepreneurial opportunities that would otherwise not be available to them.
Why Our Communities Need BUILD
We believe that all students have the same potential and drive to succeed. The reality, however, is that students in underserved neighborhoods begin with limited, and sometimes no, motivation or role models. Not viewed as "college material", they're tracked to academic courses that offer minimal support. And because low expectations equal mediocre results, you can clearly see how a disadvantaged student's potential rarely manifests into real opportunities for success.
Steering Students in the Right Direction
It's critical to reach young people in high school. This is where they can go one way or the other: they can get attention and succeed, or they can get ignored and end up on the wrong path.
Our program provides students with attention and motivation, which inspires a new-found love of learning. So much so that 100% of BUILD graduates have graduated from high school and enrolled in college. Most importantly, as students prosper, the entire community benefits. Students not only become role models, they give back, becoming leaders and improving their communities.
