Mission Statement

Mystic Museum of Art is the vibrant hub connecting community, creative expression and rich artistic heritage. The mission of Mystic Museum of Art is to inspire creativity and critical dialogue by engaging the regional community in the understanding, appreciation and practice of visual art.

Description

Founded in 1913, the Mystic Museum of Art maintains a permanent collection of artwork by members of the Mystic Arts Colony and the Center's founding artists. These historic works help visitors to make connections between the current community of Mystic artists and Mystic's early artists. They also serve as primary sources for the study of Mystic's early 20 th century history.

Mystic Museum of Ar organizes approximately 14 exhibitions a year in four galleries totaling nearly 4,000 square feet. These exhibitions offer opportunities for aspiring and accomplished artists as well as the general public to exhibit and view art of all styles. The Center partners with other artistic organizations, such as the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts and Connecticut Women Artists, to present collaborative exhibitions as well.

Education programs at MMA began as early as the 1940s with a need for arts instruction. As demand and support for the program increased, a studio wing was added to the facility in 1999. Each year, the Center offers an array of studio-based classes, reaching over 600 individuals. School outreach was introduced in 1999 today serves over 1,500 students and teachers in New London County. Diverse offerings also include artists' talks, guided art trips, evening socials, family programs, pre-school classes and off-site programs.
