Description

The Des Plaines Park District is an award-winning district 20 miles northwest of Chicago, featuring 60 parks and facilities, with more than 200 recreational and education programs for kids, teens, adults, and families. Parks include a variety of neighborhood spaces with playgrounds, ball fields, walking/jogging/biking paths, soccer fields, basketball, volleyball, picnic shelters, horseshoe courts, memorial tress and benches, a concert pavilion, ponds, and native planting gardens. Fishing, Boating, Sailing and Paddleboating are enjoyed for three seasons on Lake Opeka. Facilities include: Prairie Lakes Community Center and Fitness Center; the Leisure Center Health Club; Creative Corners Preschool; Des Plaines Teen Center; Des Plaines School of Dance; Golf Center Des Plaines (the Premier Golf Practice Facility in the Midwest); Mystic Waters, one of Northern Illinois' most beautiful water parks; Mountain View Adventure Center, with Mini-Golf, Batting Cages, Skate and BMX Bike Parks; the Lake Park 18-hole Golf Course and the Golf Center's 9-hole Rick Jacobson designed lighted course; Prairie Lakes Theater, a beautiful 300 seat live venue, is home to Footlighters Theatre Company, Big Noise Theatre Company, CYT, the Des Plaines Community Concert Band, and the Artistry in Motion Dance Company. Footlighters produces two shows each year, there are two Artistry performances, a variety of Concert Band performances, and a full season of both the Big Noise Theater Company productions, and CYT shows. Popular annual events include the Spring Fun Fair, the Chase to the Taste 5k Run/Walk, the School of Dance Recital, the Live at the Lake Summer Entertainment Series, Fiesta!, the three-day Fall Fest and Open Air Market, a catch-and-release Fishing Derby, and the Lake Wonderland Winter Festival. The district focuses on family-oriented events, and most are free; complete information is always on the website and in the quarterly program guide.
