Mission Statement

Our mission at Reaching Heights is to mobilize community resources to foster highly valued public schools that provide all Cleveland Heights-University Heights (CHUH) students a successful education.


The vision of our Many Villages school-based tutoring program is to provide targeted literacy interventions to every identified student and provide tutoring support to every teacher in need.

Many Villages is a School-based Academic Tutoring Program created by Reaching Heights (ReachingHeights.org) in 2004. This program was developed to ferret out the best-practices around direct involvement of volunteers and teachers. Our experience has helped us to recognize our targeted intervention based approach works and yields tangible results for everyone involved. Our program works to meet the needs of each of our seven elementary schools. Program components include volunteer recruiting, teacher and tutor orientation, scheduling, ongoing support and focused evaluation. All of our Villages work to provide sufficient volunteer assistance to teachers and students, and share a commitment to our three program expectations. We believe tutoring should be productive, motivating and satisfying for students, teachers and volunteers. While parents form the backbone of each school’s academic volunteer corps, we welcome and celebrate participation from our local community members.

Volunteers can give as much at 1 hour, three times a week or as little as one half-hour one time a week. Whatever our volunteers can contribute, it is a much needed valuable addition and quite often a fun opportunity to make a lasting difference and feel immediate rewards. The old adage is true: It really does take a village to raise a child. So come, volunteer and become a part of ours!

Would you recommend Reaching Heights?

This is the most effective education support program that uses volunteers that I have seen. We provide specific assistance to students that have been identified as in need of support. The intervention was designed by teachers, and the effect is evaluated. It works.

In addition to helping support the program at Reaching Heights, I also have volunteered at 2 of the schools. Supporting the emerging readers and seeing their progress week by week is such a wonderful experience!! I look forward to their smiles and banter. The kids are adorable and happy to see me arrive & the teachers really appreciate the help. I love the work of this program and I adore being a Village tutor.
