Mission Statement

PlayGround was founded in 1994 to support the identification and professional development of the Bay Area's most promising emerging playwrights and, in the process, ensure the future of the American Theatre. More than just a play development program, PlayGround focuses on the creation of a true theatre community by nurturing the collaborative process between first-time or early development playwrights, and established professional actors and directors. Using the ten-minute form, PlayGround creates a microcosm of the greater theatre scene, allowing for experimentation and risk-taking as well as the honing of style and technique.

Description

PlayGround's current ongoing programs include the Monday Night PlayLab, the Emerging Playwrights Festival and Awards, and periodic Emerging Playwright Workshops. The Monday Night PlayLab features approximately 6 of the best short theatre pieces culled from an average of 25 submissions each month, written in just five days and inspired from a single topic assigned by PlayGround. The works are professionally staged by some of the Bay Area's top directors and actors on the third Monday of each month. The Emerging Playwright Awards recognize the most promising new writers of the past season's PlayLab series. The award includes an honorarium and full production in the Emerging Playwrights Festival produced at the conclusion of each season.
