Mission Statement

Safe Schools/Healthy Students is dedicated to implementing a comprehensive, integrated, community-wide program for students, parents, and educators aimed at promoting school safety and healthy youth development.

Description

1) To create a safe and healthy environment in all schools for students and staff

  • A district wide security assessment has taken place, identifying all safety and security needs; new equipment and systems will be installed to address those security deficiencies
  • Crisis response plans will be developed in all schools
  • A restorative justice program will be developed for the district
  • A bullying prevention curriculum will be initiated in all schools

2) Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drug (ATOD) prevention activities

  • A cadre of VT Act 51 (ATOD) trainers will help disseminate critical ATOD training in all schools
  • Summer program will integrate ATOD education
  • Tobacco cessation education programs
  • ATOD activities will be integrated in our current After School program
  • A district wide ATOD educator pairs with guidance counselors and school nurses to provide ATOD education in all schools

3) Student behavioral, social and emotional supports

  • PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) will be implemented district wide to enhance school climate and create systems to address disruptive behavior
  • Parents will be engaged in discussions and various events to inform our parent outreach program
  • Notification system will provide more frequent and easy communication to parents about school sponsored activities
  • Community wide dinners sponsored by SS/HS grant
  • A comprehensive summer program will offer students challenging and fun education in the areas of healthy choices, leadership and a middle school program that focuses on transition to the high school

4) Mental health services

  • Children at the PreK level who are in need of mental health services will receive needed treatment
  • A trauma consultant will work in childcare environments and with staff in all schools
  • Additional school based mental health counselors will be available to treat children who need services
  • Mental health counseling staff will provide ongoing training and support to guidance, nurses and other staff

5) Early childhood social and emotional learning programs

  • A behavioral interventionist will work with area childcare providers in effectively managing difficult behaviors in their settings
  • Parent survey will determine what support parents need
  • Educational opportunities for parents will be provided
  • ATOD programs for families with PreK students
  • An intensive program that provides ongoing support for childcare providers and focuses on PreK retention rates
