Mission Statement

The mission of the Sebasticook Regional Land Trust is to conserve the rich wild and working landscape of Central Maine through land protection and public education.

Description

Sebasticook Regional Land Trust has its roots in the Friends of Unity Wetlands (FUW), a regional land trust that formed in 2004 to conserve the wild and working landscape of a nine-town complex in Central Maine. The FUW's success in its first five years includes: permanently conserving almost 2,000 acres of farm, forest and wild lands; serving more than 350 participants in public programs for children, families, and adults; and constructing and/or maintaining more than four miles of public access trails. Every FUW organizational achievement owes its success to the collaborative efforts of our members, volunteers and community allies.

As conservation efforts moved forward, the FUW Board of Directors recognized the inherent connection between land use within the entire Sebasticook River watershed and the founding conservation values of the organization. Accordingly, the FUW expanded its service region in October 2009 and changed its name to the Sebasticook Regional Land Trust (SRLT). In 2010, the newly named Sebasticook Regional Land Trust has initiated land protection and outreach in the 947 square-mile watershed of the Sebasticook River.
