Mission Statement

The We Are New York Community Leadership Project helps adult immigrants practice English in conversation groups based at community organizations and led by volunteers.

Description

The We Are New York Community Project, sponsored by the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs and the City University of New York, provides FREE English Conversation Groups to immigrant adults.

Structured around We Are New York, our Emmy-winning TV program, these Conversation Groups help adult immigrants learn and practice English.

With the TV show and the Conversation Groups, we are addressing the demand for English classes from the 1.8 million adult New Yorkers who want to learn English.

In addition to helping adult immigrants improve their English, our major program goals are to help participants 1) engage in their communities and the life of the city; 2) increase their confidence and feel a sense of personal empowerment; 3) learn more about important issues and City services, like health topics, financial literacy, and education; and 4) finally to see themselves as empowered leaders
