Mission Statement

The mission of Bluegrass Council of the Blind is to provide resources and services to all people affected by a loss of sight; improving lives for all by empowering persons with a loss of vision to continue living independently as productive, contributing members of their community, and to educate the public on the rights, abilities, and needs of the blind and visually impaired. Services are inclusive of anyone directly or indirectly impacted by the effects of a loss of sight.

Description

The Bluegrass Council of the Blind, Inc. provides information, education, advocacy, and referral to blind and visually impaired (blind/vi) adults in Fayette and surrounding Eastern KY counties.

Among the services offered are peer counseling; referral to appropriate agencies or programs to assist individuals in their adjustment to blindness; educational and social activities; advocacy services for the blind; a speakers’ bureau to promote the potential of blind/vi adults within the community.

BCB offers demonstrations of many aids, appliances, and software specific to the needs of blind/vi adults. Catalogs and brochures describing aids and devices that can be purchased directly from the supplier are available from BCB. The Council publishes a quarterly newsletter in large print, on cassette tape, or via email to all who request inclusion on our mailing list. This newsletter makes interested persons aware of the various activities of the Council; current legislative actions affecting the blind; and other items of interest and activities within the community.

All services offered by the Council are free of charge.
