Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide, support & develop community literacy programs aimed to improve the reading skills of students who have identified reading deficits. While at the same time fostering community involvement in public schools by bringing volunteers & students together through tutoring & mentoring opportunites.

Description

Power To Read is a volunteer based tutoring program targeting students grades k-3 who have been identified as reading below grade level. Volunteers work one on one with the same student each week and each session is one hour. All volunteers receive 4 hours of training using the Phono-Graphix reading method. Each volunteer uses a personalized lesson plan notebook which contains comprehensive step by step directions and worksheets. The Power To Read staff is always on hand to support the volunteers with any needs, questions or assistance. Each reading station is furnished with Phono-Graphix lesson manipulatives, supplies and a full reading series of books that compliment the lessons.
