Mission Statement

The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) was set up in 1985, to promote environmentally sustainable and equitable transportation policies and projects worldwide. ITDP was organized by leading advocates for sustainable transport in the US who realized that the US was exporting its model of automobile dependence to developing countries and, most recently, Central and Eastern Europe. ITDP chose to focus on counteracting this development.

Description

ITDP promotes sustainable transportation in three ways: First, we have worked to reform the international development institutions. ITDP organized the Multilateral Development Bank Transport Sector Task Force, which brought about a fundamental change in World Bank transport sector lending, leading to the initiation of projects supporting non-motorized modes of transport in dozens of countries, and increasing their support for public transit. We also organized and co-chair the United Nations Transport Caucus which continues to play a key role in raising the importance of sustainable transport issues at the United Nations institutions and conferences. Most recently we have been asked by UNDP to help them develop their new public transport policy. Secondly, ITDP provides technical assistance to sustainable transport advocacy campaigns around the world Finally, ITDP implements demonstration projects which show international development agencies the critical role that basic mobility plays in the reduction of poverty
