Mission Statement

The mission of the Worthington Thrift Shop is to provide financial support to the Columbus Cancer Clinic, a free cancer clinic under Life Care Alliance. The Worthington Thrift Shop (WTS) started in 1967 with a desire to help individuals impacted by cancer. The volunteers wanted to operate a profitable thrift store and offer customers good useable items at a low cost. As a registered 501(3)(c), it provides a wonderful source for individuals to donate their gently used unwanted items or consign them. The WTS is proud to be able to operate the shop with volunteers. They come with a commitment to the mission, sometimes being touched by cancer themselves or has a family member or dear friend who has dealt with cancer. The volunteer is the heart of the WTS. It is successful because of the dedication of those who care, both volunteers and donors.

Description

The Shop is staffed entirely by volunteers, and is overseen by a volunteer Board. Volunteer membership is open to individuals 18 years or older. Volunteers work on a schedule to manage all facets of the Shop. Ongoing volunteers pay minimal dues to help defray some of the costs of the social aspects of the organization. The Shop also partners with Bishop Watterson as a work site for students in their Sophomore Service program.

Volunteers assist in processing donations, helping customers in consignments, organizing the shop, preparing displays, cashiering, helping customers with purchases. They also manage publicity and social media for the shop, setting up photo shoots, emailing customer base, and they test donated electronics, steam clothing and polish silver! Whatever it takes to maintain and advertise a well curated inventory for the customer. Volunteers receive training in all areas of operation.

While the Shop requires a regular schedule for its retail operations. volunteers are encouraged and welcome to assist in more specialized tasks that can be more intermittent. We encourage anyone who likes this great environment, busy and people oriented, to contact us to see how they can help.
