Mission Statement

The Motivational Edge, Inc., a nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational organization, is committed to providing cutting edge, enhanced academic and music programs to underprivileged and underachieving children, as well as those with learning deficiencies.

The Motivational Edge furnishes a supportive framework as children and families encounter opportunities for: academic maturation, musical intellect, growth of character and increased self-regard.

Description

Academic programs include: After School Programs, Summer Enrichment Programs and small group instruction in math, science, reading or language arts, FCAT Preparation, SAT Preparation, and High School Placement Test Preparation. Through the utilization of individual and small group instruction, educators provide personalized instruction in a number of areas to meet the needs of our students. All curriculum correlates with the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards and is individualized for each county, therefore providing students an immediate supplement, further enhancing the learning process.

The Motivational Edge offers musical instruction in the following areas, but not limited to: piano, voice, guitar, woodwinds, brass, drums, percussion and flute. As well, we incorporate music in our academic setting. Research indicates that music enhances a student’s ability to learn. Specific concepts are taught through song and rhythmic pattern, as studies consistently demonstrate increased retention with this methodology.

The Motivational Edge also uses music as a therapeutic tool for students diagnosed with many learning disorders or behavior/communication disorders. One main focus is music and autism. There are many benefits to using music with people on the autism spectrum. One of these benefits is that music provides the structural regularity that children with autism need. It is possible to expand that child’s range of functioning. Depending on the child's level on the autism spectrum, researchers find that music assists with communication in different ways. For the child at the severe end of the spectrum, music is often the means of communication. Often, as one starts a music session for children at this portion of the spectrum, the excitement and pleasure of music is clearly visible. For the moderately involved child, music can serve as a carrier signal for verbal communication. For the child with high-functioning autism or Asperger Syndrome, music can serve to organize the verbal communication skills that already exist.

One of our latest programs is, "The Motivating Parent." This program was created by Dra. Clara Barranco and other professionals and targets the lack of motivation in children and helps parents understand the psychological roots of the lack of motivation. It also offers support and strategies of communication for unmotivated children. Dra. Barranco has presented similar lectures in many prestigious forums, including the International Psychology of Congress in Acapulco, Mexico.
