Mission Statement

The mission of Save Babies Through Screening Foundation, formerly known as Tyler for Life Foundation, is to improve the lives of babies by preventing mental retardation and death resulting from disorders detectable through newborn screening.

Description

Save Babies Through Screening Foundation, originally known as the Tyler for Life Foundation, was created in 1998 by Tera and Dallas Mize who lost their infant son, Tyler Wayne, to galactosemia, a completely treatable condition which can be detected through newborn screening. It is their hope that the foundation will help to prevent other families from having to endure the pain of losing a child needlessly. Operating nationally with the support of volunteers, Save Babies Through Screening Foundation serves to raise public awareness of life-threatening disorders detectable through newborn screening; promotes expanded/comprehensive newborn screening beyond state mandates; tracks research and maintains a website as a clearinghouse of information; facilitates communication among screening programs, support groups, and families; advocates for improved newborn screening guidelines and regulations; promotes national consistency among screening programs; and encourages enhanced resources for newborn screening and follow-up care programs. Of the 4 million babies born annually in the U.S., 1 in every 1500 newborns is affected by a metabolic disorder. The vision of Save Babies Through Screening Foundation is that ALL babies be screened in a timely manner for all disorders consistent with the most advanced laboratory practice, thereby ensuring an optimum healthy start in life.
