Mission Statement

Nazarene Compassionate Ministries, Inc. (NCMI) is a national non-profit, faith-based intermediary whose mission is to mobilize public and private resources to help the church fulfill its biblical mandate to eliminate poverty and respond to natural disasters, calling individuals to loving, compassionate, and just service. NCMI provides capacity building, technical assistance, volunteer recruitment, and resource development for the thousands of Compassionate Churches; 180 local faith-based (501)(c)(3) nonprofits affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene located across the United States, known as Compassionate Ministry Centers, (CMC), and the nine colleges and universities that make up the Nazarene Higher Education System. While not a part of its domestic national service agenda, NCMI also serves as an intermediary for more than 40 Nazarene-affiliated Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO's) conducting international compassionate ministries and disaster relief work.

Description

Trained Mentors:

Goal : Increase the number of at-risk youth enrolled and retained in high quality mentoring services by more that 50% over three years from a base line of 300 youth to 400 in year three for a total of 900 youth being served over three years.

Diaster Recovery Volunteers:

Goal: NCMI is devloping effective training manuals and materials to define volunteer roles in preparation for disaster response, how to work with local emergency management organization to coordinate disaster-related activities, and understanding staff roles during disaster deployment and recovery.

Institutions of Higher Education:

Goal: These five universities are uniquely positioned near major urban cores such as Oklahoma City, Los Angeles, Boston, Nashville, Kansas, MO and Kansas City. This opportunity provides a meaningful experience for students, volunteers, and AmeriCorps VISTA Members to reflect on service; foster positive attitudes about citizenship and lifelong service; and meets a real community need. For example: At Southern Nazarene University, students volunteer at City Rescue Mission which offers individuals support to overcome addictions and find jobs. Additionally many students are engaged in a variety of organizations within Oklahoma City that provided services for people in poverty.
