Mission Statement
Our Mission: Counseling in Schools, Inc., a (501(c)(3), was established in 1984 to bring quality counseling to students, families and staff in the New York City Public School system. Our goal is to help students and staff succeed in the classroom and in life through counseling and referrals to appropriate entitlements and benefits.
Description
Our Program: We manage 34 programs within the Department of Education, serving over 2,000 impoverished students and their families in all 5 boroughs. All the target schools have high incidence of academic underperformance, dropping out prior to graduation, and in-school violence. Many children are in foster care, living in transitional housing, parenting young people themselves, and with little support for their home lives. CSNN's programs and sites:
- Nine United Way Community Achievement Projects serving 1,000 students in 3 boroughs
- Nine 21 st Century Community Learning Center After-School grants serving 600 students in 2 boroughs
- Six Department of Education McKinney-Vento/American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funded programs serving 450 students in 3 boroughs
- Ten Department of Education Pre-Qualified Solicitation contracts serving 150 students in 3 boroughs
Our school-based counseling programs offer critical support to school communities and teachers who struggle daily to address the tremendous social and emotional needs of their students, without the support needed to avoid burn- out.
