The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives from cancer, and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.

Description

The American Cancer Society is a national organization with many local and Bay Area community offices. It offers patient services and transportation, legislative advocacy, community, corporate, and school programs, conferences and events, Discovery Resale Shops, and research. Its 2015 goal is to cut cancer mortality in half, reduce cancer incidence by 25%, and improve the quality of life for people affected by cancer. It teaches prevention and survivorship through early detection & treatment for all, an end to tobacco use, exercise and healthy diet. Eighty per cent of all services are carried out by volunteers, who are active in breast, prostate, colorectal, lung and other cancer campaigns, legislative advocacy, increasing diversity and collaboration, volunteer and income development. The American Cancer Society is the largest private funder of cancer research in the world.
