Mission Statement

Mission statement:

"To collect, pasteurize and distribute donor human milk to meet medical needs."

Description

A milk bank screens, collects, processes and dispenses donated human milk as a community service, providing human milk to babies whose own mothers cannot supply the milk to meet their baby’s needs.

Currently, Oregon and other Northwest milk donors are having their milk shipped via FedEx to the nearest processing milk banks in Denver, CO and San Jose, CA--not a very "green" thing to do! It also costs more for NW hospitals using donor milk who then order the processed milk from CO and CA than if we had a local NW milk bank.

The presence of the Northwest Mothers Milk Bank will also increase the awareness of the real health benefits of donor milk for babies and thus further drive the use of and demand for this life-saving nutrition.

"Human milk-fed premature infants receive significant benefits with respect to host protection and improved developmental outcomes compared with formula-fed infants." American Academy of Pediatrics, 2005 Policy Statement, Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk.
