Augusta Museum of History

Description

The Augusta Museum of History presents the history of Augusta and the region. The large, permanent exhibition entitled "Augusta's Story" is an award-winning chronology of 12,000 years of local history from early Indians through Susan Still's 1997 space shuttle mission. Other permanent exhibitions include "The Art of Healing," a medical history from the 18th through the 20th centuries, a restored 1914 steam locomotive, and a reconstructed 1930s gas station. Visitors will clean cotton in a replica cotton gin and view a 56-foot Petersburg boat that speaks to the river and commercial activities. From packing a canoe for a 1760s fur trader, to sitting at the control panel of a space shuttle, to dressing up and playing games through history, children will learn history by interacting with it in the "Susan L. Still Children's Discovery Gallery." Additionally, the History Theater has continuously running historical documentaries.
