Mission Statement

The Pittsburg Arts and Community Foundation's overarching mission is to improve the quality of life in Pittsburg, California by fostering civic pride, combating blight, providing affordable housing, and promoting the arts, literacy, and education.

To further its mission, the Foundation has primary main branches, each with its own sub-mission. These include:

Arts, Literacy, and Education:

  • Mission: to improve literacy, promote education, increase exposure to fine arts and literature, create an environment where local artists will thrive, and unlock the artistic and educational potential of every Pittsburg resident in a productive and inspiring way.
Community Events:
  • Mission: to use community events as a catalyst for revitalization and strengthening the community by providing active opportunities for community building, social interaction, and neighborhood unification; supporting existing businesses and attracting new businesses by drawing customers and visitors from Pittsburg the greater Bay Area; and enhancing the recognition of the City of Pittsburg as a vibrant destination for entertainment, fine dining, shopping, and investment.

Community Development:

  • Mission: to improve the quality of life for Pittsburg residents by expanding the supply of affordable housing; supporting sustainable, transit-friendly developments and expanding economic opportunities available to residents through job training, workforce development and downtown revitalization.
  • Sub-Missions of the Community Development Division are: to provide attractive, high quality, safe, and stable affordable housing opportunities to the Pittsburg individuals and families in most desperate need of low and very low income housing; to participate in the development of the City’s two transit villages, take advantage of local and national grant opportunities related to sustainable development, and integrate affordable housing with transit to improve quality of life in Pittsburg; to promote the economic opportunity for and security of Pittsburg residents through job preparation, hands on training, mentorship programs, and workforce development for local industries and green jobs; to increase economic opportunity and security for Pittsburg residents by increasing the number and breadth of employment opportunities in the City, particularly in the green sector; and, to attract new businesses and help existing businesses succeed in order to increase the shopping and dining opportunities for Pittsburg residents, increase local job opportunities, and cater to a vibrant atmosphere downtown that all Pittsburg residents will benefit from.

    Economic Development & Outreach:

    • Mission: to promote the sustainable growth of Pittsburg’s local economy and tax base, to foster a competitive economic environment, to increase local job opportunities, and promote the city to consumers and potential businesses in order ensure the long-term economic stability of the City of Pittsburg via a strong economy, strong tax base.
    • Sub-Missions of the Economic Development & Outreach Division are:to provide resources to the business and development communities for the purpose of attracting, retaining, and expanding the local sales and property tax base, while maintaining a positive balance between growth, social equity, and the economy; and, to eliminate blight and assist with redevelopment activities by promoting business opportunities to prospective tenants, supporting existing retailers by facilitating downtown business association meetings, and marketing downtown businesses and events to consumers in Pittsburg and throughout the Bay Area.

    Description

    Arts, Literacy, and Education:

    • Projects, Programs, and Responsibilities: The Arts and Literacy Branch is responsible for management and maintenance of the Art Shack Building, and the management and implementation of a wide variety of art projects and programs (i.e. City Arts, Art Shack classes, senior services, exhibits and galleries, theater collaborations), literacy projects and programs (i.e. Scholastic Book Fairs, Been There Done That, Reading Zones, Foundation Bookstore), and educational projects and programs (i.e. including programs for youth and seniors, collaboration with the Pittsburg Library, collaboration with local schools, and mentorship programs). New program development and grant writing are a major component of this branch as the Foundation strives to increase opportunities that will support every member of the Pittsburg community in reaching their full educational and artistic potential, regardless of their income level.

    Community Events:

    • Projects, Programs, and Responsibilities:The Community Events branch of the Foundation is responsible for the management and implementation of the weekly Car Shows, Farmer’s Markets, a variety of cultural events (including but not limited to Thanksgiving, Juneteenth, Chinese New Year, Holiday Lights, Columbus Day, and Mexican Independence Day), Cinema Under the Stars, Concerts on the Plaza, and the development, coordination, and implementation of new events (including but not limited to a Pittsburg Bloom Festival, a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, and a Criterium Bicycle Race).

    Community Development:

    • Projects, Programs, and Responsibilities:The Community Development branch of the Foundation is responsible for the development of affordable housing, community revitalization, workforce development, job training, and the pursuit of sustainable, livable development near transit.

      Economic Development & Outreach:

      • Economic Development & Outreach branch of the Foundation is responsible for attracting new businesses to town, retaining existing businesses, expanding existing businesses, building relationships with sister cities, and marketing Old Town to consumers and potential businesses via a district website, social media, and promotional advertisements.
