Mission Statement

At the end of each school year the Anchorage Public Library begins a Summer Reading Celebration (SRC) that encourages children of all ages to continue reading during the summer. Reading Rendezvous, the annual SRP kick-off event, is a fun and exciting way to get families involved early so that reading becomes part of their summer routine.

Description

Anchorage Public Library's 2010 Summer Reading Celebration "Make a Splash--Read!" launches off with the 10 th Annual Reading Rendezvous on Saturday, May 15 th, from noon to 4 pm on the Lawn at Loussac Library. The entire family is invited to dive into the fun at this free event co-hosted by Anchorage Public Library, Alaska Center for the Book and Friends of Pets.

Reading Rendezvous is overflowing with activities and entertainment. After signing up for the Summer Reading Celebration, kids can sail their way around and say "Ahoy" to various community sponsors. Musicians Fiddle De Dee (12:30pm), Magician Don Russell (2:00pm) and roaming jugglers are scheduled to perform. Bring along a picnic blanket to sit on so you don't miss a moment of this splish splash reading bash.

This event is possible through the generous support of the following sponsors: Alaska Airlines, Alaska Center for the Book, Best Beginnings, ConocoPhillips, Friends of Pets, Friends of the Library, Municipal Light and Power, and Target.

We are also excited to have the following community organizations participating in this event: Alaska Bird Club, Alaska Botanical Garden, Alaska Center for the Book, Alaska Junior Theater, Anchorage Fire Department's Station 5, Anchorage Public Library, Aurora Waldorf School of Alaska, Bosco's, Classic Toys, Cook Inlet Literary Council, Friends of Pets, Friends of the Library, The Music Canvas, the United States Coast Guard, UAA Circle K International, and more!

Nearly 4,000 readers participate in the Anchorage Public Library's Summer Reading Celebration which is designed to keep kids reading through the summer months. Any reading - including the newspaper or comic books - counts toward daily totals. Young readers and listeners reach goals, based on time spent reading or listening to books, to earn prizes donated by community sponsors. Kids of all ages from babes in arms to teens can participate. There's a reading program for adults too!
