Mission Statement

Diaz Music Institute aspires to become Houston's premiere non-profit fine arts institution committed to the education, preservation, performance, and perpetuation of Latin music. It will do so by developing and showcasing locally and nationally an acclaimed repertory ensemble, "Caliente," and by creating and implementing a variety of Latin music education opportunities.

Description

Diaz Music Institute offers music workshops during the summer and after school for at-risk children. The Institute also produces two major concerts during the year. The first is "Noche Caliente" at the Miller Outdoor Theatre, we have just completed our 9th annual show with Salsa Legend Johnny Pacheco. Also "Salsa Beats" on the Kemah Boardwalk in Kemah, TX. Our summer workshops offer master classes, music theory, composition, ear training, music history, and weekly concerts with guest artists and clinicians. Workshops are offered to students 5 years of age on up and can enter the program with no identifiable music acumen. Through a process of accessment and practice, students begin to emerge in talent skill areas which include trumpet, bass, saxophone, percussion, guitar, dance, costume design, and vocals. Students benefir from a strict regiment of being on time to rehearsals, mastering the discipline of music/performances undertaken and taking critique. Participants learn to set and achieve high goals, and develop leadership and mentoring skills.
