Mission Statement
Arts for the Aging is a pioneering organization that
provides outreach programs specially designed to
engage older adults in health improvement and life
enhancement through the arts.
Description
For 22 years, Arts for the Aging has promoted healthy aging in older adults throughout the metro D.C. area. Free arts outreach workshops target the disadvantaged and those with severe cognitive impairments. They provide seniors with physical and cognitive stimulation that positively impacts their mental and physical health, longevity, and overall quality of life. Specially trained professional teaching artists conduct AFTA’s pioneering programs to maximize the health benefits of the arts. Outreach services impact 1,000 seniors where they are aging in place: in 36 area day care centers, nursing homes and community centers. 200 children take part in intergenerational programs. AFTA is the only local agency that provides creative elder care to the most underserved, frail seniors where they reside or receive care, or where they otherwise would not be exposed to quality arts programs. These activities are funded primarily through public contributions from states, counties, private foundations, corporations, and annual fundraising campaigns and events. AFTA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization.
