Mission Statement

Philly Tree People’s purpose is to work to beautify the neighborhood by bringing tree coverage to the streets of East Kensington, Kensington and Fishtown - all of which are areas deemed by The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society to have critically low tree coverage. We will work to inspire the people in these neighborhoods to take personal responsibility for the urban forest - educating, training and supporting them as they plant and care for trees and improve the neighborhoods in which they live, learn, work and play.

Description

Philly Tree People is a volunteer group founded by three homeowners living in Philadelphia, zip codes 19125 and 19134. Our primary function is to plant sidewalk trees in the neighborhood. We also provide educational information to homeowners about proper care of city trees. Additionally, tree care is provided in the form of water and pruning. The founding members and neighborhood volunteers plant the trees, and the founding members work to educate homeowners and provide tree care.

We work with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society to organize tree plantings twice per year in our target zip codes (19125 and 19134). Our first tree planting was in March 2008. We planted 72 trees and over 100 volunteers joined the planting activities. All trees were planted in zip codes 19125 and 19134. Our second tree planting event was November 16, 2008, in which we planted 95 trees with over 70 volunteers. To date, we have held four tree plantings and have planted over 300 trees in two years.
